In Big Rock Candy Mountain, Wolf Willow, and Recapitulation, Wallace Stegner wrote about how his childhood and adolescence shaped the man he became. To the places he lived and to parental influences he ascribed “the prejudices I wear like dishonorable scars, … the virtues I respect and the weaknesses I condemn….” This presentation will look at the self-assessment of a thoroughly self-examined man.

Sid trip participants will be invited to reflect on one or two clear lessons they learned growing up in a particular place.

Dale MartinDale Martin teaches history at MSU-Bozeman. He has lived in and visited many places in Stegner country, including Seattle and Redmond, Washington; Eastend, Saskatchewan; Salt Lake City; and Great Falls.
